Real Ale and Cider

Our Ales

The Blue Anchor has always been a forerunner in the promotion of real ale in South Wales. We were the first winner of the CAMRA pub of the year award back in 1983.

The house beers we stock at the moment are:

Wadsworth 6X

A firm favourite in the Blue Anchor since 1980, when we were the first stockist in South Wales. 6X is full bodied and distinctive, and remains one of the South's most famous beers. The beer is mid-brown in colour, malty and fruity with balancing hop character.

Wye Valley Hereford Pale Ale

We first came across HPA when we had it as a guest ale back in 2005. It proved so popular that we have kept it as a house ale ever since. HPA is a truly delightful pale ale. It's smooth on the palate, and boasts a citrus hop aroma leading to a balanced bitter finish.

Theakston Old Peculier

The power of OP should never be under-estimated! A dark, strong beer, Old Peculier is justifiably famous for its rich and complete character, its sheer strength – and for being a beer with a long history.

Brains Bitter

Sourced locally from Cardiff, our Brains bitter is an extremely popular beer, especially with travellers wanting to try a local brew. Brains bitter is rich amber coloured, well balanced and refreshing. Goldings and Fuggles hops from The Welsh Marches create an appetising crisp aroma to complement the subtle flavour of fine pale malt.

As well as our four house ales, we also keep one guest beer which changes weekly and is usually sourced from small and micro breweries, both local and national.
Some of the breweries that have featured recently as our guest:

Otley Brewery - Pontypridd
Celt Experience - Caerphilly
Vale of Glamorgan Brewery - Barry
Cottage Brewery - Somerset
Sharps - Cornwall
Bryncelyn Brewery - Port Talbot
Hydes - Manchester
Archers Brewery - Wiltshire
Cotswold Spring Brewery - Gloucestershire
Felinfoel - Dyfed
Gray Trees - Aberdare
Evan Evans - Llandeilo
Bragdy Twt Lol - Trefforest

We also stock a constantly changing variety of cider and perry from local producers.
Our current range of ciders are produced by local brewer, Gwynt-y-ddraig, and are available both on draught and by the bottle.
